Bernice has made a number of discoveries (Picture: ITV) Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) in Emmerdale has been hiding something, and Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles) is desperate to find out. After divorcing paedophile teacher Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) – before she began abusing Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) – he’s fallen for the flame-haired beautician, but has recently begun acting strange. The smartly-dressed doctor’s affair with Bernice began when she was still with hapless Daz (Mark Jordon), but it’s now a fully-fledged relationship. Although they seemed to be on track to becoming a dales power couple, some odd things have been happening recently. For example, Bernice found balaclava in Liam’s bag recently, and has since become convinced that he’s a serial killer. After more grim discoveries – a bloodied shirt and a scalpel – Bernice’s paranoia has been growing, and she’s now certain that he’s going to bump her off. Weirdly, however, it hasn’t stopped her deciding to propose to him. Her sister Nicola King’s (Nicola Wheeler) protestations that something is dodgy aren’t helping, and tonight things really amp up a notch. Liam decides to take Bernice on a road trip, and drives her into the woods. Nicola sees them leave and drags her husband Jimmy (Nick Miles) into a chase situation, fearing that the worst is about to happen. [metro-tag-post-strip] A showdown follows, and it’s clear that Liam is confused as to why Bernice is screaming for her life. That certainly doesn’t mean that he’s off the hook though. Fan rumours are abounding that Liam has murdered his first wife – Lara – who is the mum to his daughter Leanna. As her cause of death hasn’t been discussed, it’s a conclusion that those watching have come to. Tonight, though, the truth will finally be revealed. DAVID Metcalfe is delighted when his estranged son begins to build bridges on Emmerdale following a turbulent couple of months. It looks as if there could be a thaw in the icy relationship between the shopkeeper and his adopted teenage son Jacob Gallagher in upcoming scenes. David Metcalfe and Leyla Harding have had a difficult time with Jacob in recent months David – who’s played by Matthew Wolfenden in the ITV soap – has been worrying about his latest round of blood tests. And the shopkeeper will be delighted when his estranged son offers him his support as he waits for the results. The father and son have been warring for weeks since David reported his ex-girlfriend, Maya Stepney, to the police for grooming and sleeping with Jacob – who was both underage and a pupil of hers at the time. Jacob has been so brainwashed by the paedophile teacher that he didn’t realise he had been groomed and thought Maya was in love with him. Even though she’s been sent to prison for her crimes, Jacob still hasn’t come to terms with what happened to him and believes they will be together when she is released. The father and son have been warring for weeks since David reported his ex-girlfriend, Maya Stepney, to the police for grooming The schoolboy – who is played by Joe-Warren Plant – even moved out of the home he shared with David, preferring to live with his grandfather Eric Pollard instead. Jacob has made no bones about the fact he blames David for Maya’s incarceration and holds him responsible for breaking them up. David has been desperate to make Jacob see that he only ever acted with his best intentions in mind. The dad thought he had a breakthrough last week when he began communicating with this son via a fake online gaming profile. It didn’t take long for Jacob to figure out what was going on though, leaving him bitterly disappointed and feeling like he still can’t trust him. [article-rail-topic title=”More on Emmerdale” term_id=”9259″ posts_number=”6″ /] So David is beyond delighted when Jacob comes along to find out how the blood tests have gone. David fought testicular cancer back in 2016 after initially refusing treatment for the disease. He underwent chemotherapy and was eventually given the all clear. But he’s lived in fear of the cancer returning ever since. And as he goes through another health scare it could be a blessing in disguise as Jacob – who was by David’s side the first time around – arrives to support him now. But will it be good or bad news for David?  [bc_video video_id=”6055954035001″ account_id=”5067014667001″ player_id=”default” embed=”in-page” padding_top=”56%” autoplay=”” min_width=”0px” max_width=”640px” width=”100%” height=”100%” caption=”Emmerdale teen Jacob Gallagher is groomed again – this time by his dad David and Layla”]

Past Lives

As often happens, an email from a distant relative has prompted me to revisit a neglected branch of my family tree. Gareth Sanger is, like me, a descendant of Stepney bootmaker Frederick French (1810 – 1887) and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Bull (1813 – 1857), who were my 3rd great grandparents. Gareth is descended from Frederick’s […]

The Man Who Made A Football Club Sir Matt Busby, who took Manchester United to unprecedented glory before seeing the club through profound tragedy, created the global entity that spreads from Old Trafford today. A player with Manchester City and Liverpool before the Second World War, Busby remained at the forefront of football through four decades and made an extraordinary contribution to the game in terms of both style and substance. In this definitive biography, Patrick Barclay looks back at Busby’s phenomenal life and career, including the rise of the Busby Babes in the 1950s, the Munich disaster that claimed 23 lives and the Wembley victory ten years on that made United the first English team to win the European Cup. Denis Law, Pat Crerand and such other members of that great side as Alex Stepney, David Sadler and John Aston are among the host of voices testifying to the qualities that set Sir Matt apart.
