This year’s Arrowverse crossover, “Elseworlds,” brings several key new characters to The CW’s shared superhero universe. One of these is the Monitor (played by LaMonica Garrett), an omniscient being who watches over the entire multiverse and whose presence foretells dire things to come for the Arrowverse – namely, some kind of “Crisis.” To help get […]

Hollywood still lacks the diversity within the ethnic minority backgrounds, both onscreen and behind the camera. Despite major improvements over the last 50 years, the playing field for white actors and those of different races is yet to be equal. Now Hollywood producers and directors are actively producing more ethnically diverse projects that involve directors […]

You might be forgiven for feeling superhero overload this holiday season. Had enough of, say, of Spider-Man for a while? Well, this may sound nuts, but consider watching not just one web-slinger but five of them in the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Instead of overload, you’ll be begging for more. The film gleefully scrambles […]

This weekend, I was lucky enough to score tickets for an early screening of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. To my delight, it soared above expectations, especially after already hearing this was one of the greatest superhero films of the year. With the long-awaited story of Miles Morales being told, it could not be in hands better […]

TV picks for Tuesday, Dec. 11 WATCH THIS: [related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”curated” curated_ids=”5619652″]“NCIS” (8 p.m., CBS): In “What Child Is This?” the team’s holiday plans are put on hold when the murder investigation of a Navy veteran includes the discovery of a newborn baby who has no identification and no apparent ties to a family. “Supergirl” (8 p.m., The CW): The series airs on a special night as it brings the three-part “Elseworlds” crossover event to its conclusion. Supergirl, The Flash, Green Arrow and Superman (guest star Tyler Hoechlin) engage in the battle of their lives. “Darci Lynne: My Hometown Christmas” (9 p.m., NBC): In this new special, ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer, the 2017 winner of “America’s Got Talent,” celebrates the holidays Oklahoma style. Joining her are her various puppets, along with Kristin Chenoweth, Toby Keith, Hunter Hayes, Pentatonix and Lindsey Stirling. “Black-ish” (9 p.m., ABC): The Johnsons have a tradition of going to the movies on Christmas and they can never agree on what to see. Dre wants to see an important film about Rosa Parks, but they all want to see the latest action-packed superhero blockbuster. Meanwhile, Junior becomes embarrassed about taking a gap year after he runs into his ex-girlfriend Megan at the theater. “30 for 30: 42 to 1” (9 p.m., ESPN): In sports, we’re used to seeing the improbable.  But the impossible is another matter entirely.  And on Feb. 11, 1990, while the odds were technically 42-1, it was very much the impossible that happened in a boxing ring in Tokyo, Japan, when James “Buster” Douglas defeated Mike Tyson for the heavyweight championship of the world. The latest entry in the documentary series tells the story of just how incredibly unlikely it was. “Momentum Generation” (10 p.m., HBO): This documentary takes a deep dive into the world of surfing, exploring how a group of teens changed the sport and its culture in the 1990s. In the 1960s, surfing in America was known primarily as a California- and Hawaii-based phenomenon associated with Beach Boys songs. In films, it was a vehicle to infuse romantic comedies with action or zany antics. Although equipment and skills evolved, the public’s perception of surfing as a novelty sport remained constant until the 1990s, when a group of punk rock-loving teens, many from troubled backgrounds, found its way to a house on the north shore of Oahu, where they changed their lives and the sport. Also on Tuesday: “The Voice” (8 p.m., NBC) “The Conners” (8 p.m., ABC) “WWE SmackDown” (8 p.m., USA) “The Kids Are Alright” (8:30 p.m., ABC) “FBI” (9 p.m., CBS) “Black-ish” (9 p.m., ABC) “Black Lightning” (9 p.m., The CW) “Letters From Baghdad” (9 p.m., PBS) “Chopped” (9 p.m., Food Network) “Below Deck” (9 p.m., Bravo) “Moonshiners” (9 p.m., Discovery) “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath” (9 p.m., A&E) “Inside the NFL” (9 p.m., Showtime) “The Curse of Oak Island” (9 p.m., History) “Splitting Up Together” (9:30 p.m., ABC) “NCIS: New Orleans” (10 p.m., CBS) “The Rookie” (10 p.m., ABC) “Nightflyers” (10 p.m., Syfy) “Hollywood Game Night” (10 p.m., NBC) “Unanchored” (10 p.m., Bravo) “Ink Master” (10 p.m., Paramount) “The Guest Book” (10:30 p.m., TBS)
