AN Irish-American family who lost four members in a horror crash said there’s “not a daay that goes” that they don’t think of the lorry driver involved. Douglas Alexander Snr, his wife Lily, both 75, and their two sons, Douglas Alexander Jnr, 52, and Stephen, 49, died after their car was collision with an articulated lorry on the N25 on December 4, 2017. Douglas Alexander Snr and wife Lily died in the accident They were killed after attempting to do a u-turn on a busy national road, an inquest heard today. A special message was read out on behalf of Debbie Alexander Cegerlak, who lost both her parents and two brothers, and Stephen Alexander’s wife, Lynn, by solicitor Caroline McLoughlin, who said the devastated family remain grateful for the heroic efforts of the emergency services to save their loved one. She said: “I express on their behalf their sincere gratitude to all who came to the assistance of their family in the immediate aftermath of the accident. “To nurse Grace O’Sullivan, it is a source of great comfort to the family to know the care afforded by you and the bravery you showed under such difficult circumstances and they are eternally grateful to you. Truck driver Paul Caulfield attended the inquest today “They have also asked that I express to the driver of the lorry, Mr. Caulfield, and his passenger, Mr. Collins, that there is not a day that goes by they do not think of you and how difficult the accident must have been for you to encounter. “They wish you health and happiness and pray that this accident will not cause you any difficulties into the future.” The four had travelled from the United States to attend the funeral of Lily’s sister, Winifred, at Cushinstown, some 5km from New Ross town. The inquest was held before Wexford County Coroner, Dr. Sean Nixon, at the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross, the same hotel where the Alexander family had last eaten before they left to attend the removal to Cushinstown church later that evening. Steve, left, pictured with his brother Doug Jr Their BMW saloon collided with the lorry at Begern on the New Ross main road at around 6.30pm on Monday, December 4, 2017. Investigating Gard Robert Carty told the inquest, that on arriving at the scene, he initially thought only a truck had been involved with the car wedged into and under the front of the lorry, while Supt. John McDonald said it was a “very, very sad accident and a very tragic loss.” Gard Forensic accident scene investigator, Tom Bolger, said the BMW had driven directly in front of the truck which was travelling at 70kmh, some 10kmh below the speed limit. He said the truck driver, Paul Caulfield, who is based in Armagh, did not have the time or the distance to avoid a collision. Mr. Caulfield was driving a Scania truck with a passenger, Kevin Collins, en-route to the UK via Rosslare. Mr. Collins told the inquest he saw the tragic collision occur. He said: “It pulled out foolishly, from the left, did a u-turn. Paul said: ‘Jesus Christ, and flashed the lights. “The BMW series did the same thing and pulled out in front of us. Paul had no time to react. Supt. John McDonald pictured at the inquest Mr. Caulfield said he slammed hard on his brakes, desperately tried to avoid a collision as his lory jack-knifed. The BMW struck the lorry’s front side-on and both ploughed into a roadside crash barrier. The truck driver said: “All I saw were lights. I slammed the brakes hard and we hit.” Dr. Nixon said the American driver of the BMW was at a disadvantage having only arrived over from the US that morning and would not have had much rest. Scene of horror smash in Wexford He said: “The driver of the car (Douglas Alexnder, Jnr) was at a major disadvantage. “They had travelled from Chicago the previous night. They did not have a lot of rest. [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ IN NEWS” posts_category=”5″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] “The driver was used to driving on the other side of the road. “Pulling out the way he did he might have expected the danger to come from the other side.” The jury returned a verdict of accidental death due to catastrophic injuries sustained in a road traffic collision.
