Not long after my last post, in November 2018, I was on an international flight and pleasantly surprised to be deep in conversation with my seatmate, a total stranger. We talked about everything–travel, food, theater, love, art, aspirations–and as we did, I recited my list of ambitious undertakings, including this blog, to which she responded, […]

Loveland Reporter-Herald
On Monday morning, 38 kids ranging from first to twelfth grades arrived at Loveland’s Rialto Theatre. Many had acted before either at the Rialto or elsewhere, while others had never before stood on a stage let alone auditioned on one. But on Saturday, all of them will stand on the theater’s stage together to portray hobgoblins, yetis and a girl in search of her best friend as they perform a new theatrical take on Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale “The Snow Queen.” Though a week may not seem like a lot of time for experienced professionals to put on a production—never mind a bunch of kids—that’s how Missoula Children’s Theatre has been doing things since its inception 50 years ago.  Today, the company consists of around 50 pairs of young performers who graduated with a degree in theater and spend their summer touring cities and towns where they spend a week working with local kids to stage a show consisting of “a twist on a classic fairy tale.” Gia Sailer, 11, second from left, reacts as she hear she and the others kids in the group silhouetted against the window were chosen to play animals Monday during the Missoula Children’s Theater auditions at the Rialto Theater Center in Loveland. Performances for their production, “The Snow Queen” will be this Saturday at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. (Photo by Jenny Sparks/Loveland Reporter-Herald) Maggie Dickinson, who along Joe Griffin forms the team covering Colorado, New Mexico and Kansas, said she is enjoying her summer with MCT because it presents a new adventure every week. “I know that sounds cheesy but it really is,” she said. “And you get really good at knowing what roles the kids would be good right away when you meet them.” Griffin said the tour also provides unique challenges because it brings the group from cities like Loveland where there is “a rich culture of the arts” to towns where none of the kids have ever had an opportunity like the one MTC provides. He said it is also rewarding to see how much all of the kids, regardless of experience, grow over the course of the week. “Just seeing how much you can get to know these kids in five days, it’s really cool and sometimes too parents come up and are just like, ‘I have never seen my kid talk like that.’ It’s so cool, and it’s just very exciting to here,” he said. Griffin said he and Dickinson will each work with half of the cast for the next three days before bringing the whole cast together for rehearsals on Thursday and Friday before the performancees on Saturday. Audiences can expect that show, which follows a girl named Greta as she goes on a journey to find her best friend after he was taken by the Snow Queen, to pack plenty of humorous punch as is typical of MTC productions. “It has all kinds of quirky jokes and you can expect odd moments and fun moments,” Griffin said. If You Go What: Missoula Children’s Theater’s “The Snow Queen” When: 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday Where: Rialto Theater, 228 E. Fourth St., Loveland Cost: $10 More Info: www.rialtotheatercenter.org/upcoming-shows/
