Redlands Daily Facts
Not sure if there was a Smudge Pot involved — the traditional football trophy for the rival schools– but the Redlands and Redlands East Valley boys tennis teams had quite the battle last week. Redlands won the match Thursday in a tiebreaker. At the end of 18 sets the teams were deadlocked 9-9 in the battle for first place in the Citrus Belt League and the No. 1 seed for the playoffs that comes with the title. The tiebreaking procedure is to count games won and the teams were tied after that as well, 70-70. Next came the rarely used second tiebreaker – sending players back to the court to compete. Finally, Redlands prevailed in that 10-8 to win the match. The Redlands boys tennis team celebrates after defeating Redlands East Valley last week to earn a share of the Citrus Belt League title. Among the key matches Redlands won to tie in sets were: Terriers No. 2 doubles team of Pavit Saluja-Paawan Singhi defeated REV’s No. 2 team 6-0, and Terriers No. 1 doubles team of Christian Lensang-Bernie Simbolon downing REV’s No. 2 team 7-5. “It was intense,” said Redlands first-year coach Kevin Tavoc, 24, a former Terriers player. “The match lasted four hours.” Asked how the Terriers responded to the victory, Tavoc said, “They were ecstatic. They were all jumping around after we told them the score.” Sean Comadena now only coaches Redlands’ girls team after previously having coached the boys and girls. But he helps out Tavoc now and then as well as assisting with the University of Redlands men’s team. Comadena played a stronger role than normal last week when Tavoc incurred an injury. “We did a lot of work with the doubles,” Comadena said. “We had our chances the first time we played REV (a Wildcats victory) but let one get away. This is a young and inexperienced team.” Comadena said it was the first time he can remember in 23 years of coaching preps that this type of tiebreaker had to be used after the teams deadlocked in sets and games. “Our kids got more and more confident as the match went on,” he said. “I have some friends who coach baseball and they said they could hear the yelling and screaming from the baseball field. It’s awesome to know how much it meant to the kids.” The Citrus Belt League tournament is being held Monday and Tuesday, April 22-23, at the University of Redlands.
