Earning my Peace

It would be so easy to let panic set in. I stand in front of a mirror. It starts off as a normal mirror, but like so many cliché movie tropes, it expands in front of me to infinity. It screams without sound back from the void, who are you? With no answer, I turn […]

The Casa Munras Golf Group celebrated its 50th Anniversary this past May, returning to Monterey where it originated in 1971. For the first several years after its inception the players stayed at the Casa Munras Motel in Monterey, thus the origin of the name. Little did the first group of organizers and participants realize that 48 years later, the tournament would still be going strong. Following a round of golf at Butte Creek Country Club, the eight original participants retired to the home of Tike Decious, the local Ford dealer, where the idea of such a yearly tournament was conceived. The tournament was probably the brainchild of Ted Blofsky, an avid golfer and sports editor for the Chico Enterprise-Record at the time. Those original eight members of the 1971 group were: Blofsky, Denny Lindo, Al Darby, Bill Krause, Roy Mills, Tom Ward, Neil Hageman, and Decious. Blofsky and Lindo are still active members of the group after fifty years, with Blofsky being the organizer year after year. Why is it the 50th anniversary but only 48 years? Because in 1981 and 1986 two tournaments were held. The group continued to travel to the Monterey area and play one of their rounds at Pebble Beach up until 1989 when the cost of the green fees to play it became too exorbitant. In 1990, the tournament was held in Sunriver-Bend, Oregon area and since then it has been held at various destinations, but mostly in Arizona and Nevada. However, in 2005 the group traveled to Homestead, Utah and then in 2013, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. All of these different venues were the responsibility, and desire of Blofsky. Blofsky made all of the arrangements, consisting of determining the destination, ordering customized golf shirts, selecting the courses to be played, arranging housing, tee times, pairings, awards dinner, cost andother activities, and all at a reduced rate. Needless to say, this is a huge undertaking just once, let alone year-after-year. Blofsky left the Enterprise-Record in the mid-1980s and took over as theeditor and publisher of the Northern California Golf Association quarterly publication, NCGA GOLF. This role allowed him to be in contact with many golf merchandisers and golf courses in the western United States, many of which advertised and promoted their wares in the NCGA magazine. It also gave Ted the opportunity to visit some of these courses and establish rapport with the head office staff. This was an essential ingredient in order to set up a tournament, at reasonable rates and at popular courses throughout the west. As a tribute to Ted Blofsky and his wife, Jan, the participants honored them with a trip to Hawaii. A total of 143 different players have participated in the fifty Casa Munras tournaments. Some of those that have significant longevity and have played in more than 20 tournaments are: Blofsky, 50; Lindo, 44; Gil Jones, 35; Carl Leverenz, 32; Tom Ward, George Maderos and Bob Foster, 28; Al Regier and Gary Bright, 26; Ron Laffins, Bill Rich and Jim Normoyle, 25; Chuck Priddy, 24; Bruce Hubbell, 21; Ed Anderson, 20. A total of 118 different courses have been played over the years, the majority being either in the Monterey or Scottsdale areas. Another amazing statistic is that out of the approximately 20,000 tee shots that have been made on par-3 holes in the 50 tournaments, only four holes-in-one have been made. Blofsky at Pebble Beach, Dennis Buckley at Carmel Valley Ranch, Anderson at the Raven at South Mountain and Brian McGovern at Dove Valley Ranch. The number of players each year is usually between 20 and 24. The number of rounds at each tournament is either four or five. Holding the tournament each year at different and prestigious golf courses would simply not have been possible without Blofsky’s influence, knowledge and his dedicated drive to perpetuate the legacy of the Casa Munras. The tournament has survived for 48 years due to his love of golf and to his dedication and commitment to his many friends.
