The 2019/20 season is almost here and that means FIFA 20 will soon be getting booted up on games consoles across the globe. Still a firm favourite with the fans EA Sports have also revealed the new Volta mode, which should delight gamers. Break New Ground with VOLTA Football in #FIFA20 #VOLTA https://t.co/TUWEow0DSf pic.twitter.com/cuPqfQtrGt — EA SPORTS FIFA (@EASPORTSFIFA) June 8, 2019 With a new game, though, comes new ratings and we’re already excited about the raft of upgrades we could be about to see. A number of young talents have continued their growth in the Premier League, while we’ve also seen some under the radar stars prove themselves to be better than their current score. But which player at every top-flight club deserves an upgrade the most? talkSPORT.com have taken a look. [article-rail-section title=”LATEST FOOTBALL STORIES” posts_category=”221″ posts_number=”12″ query_type=”recent” /] Arsenal – Mesut Ozil Arsenal fans grew frustrated with the German fielder’s lack of form this year FIFA 19 rating – 86 FIFA 20 potential rating – 83 The German playmaker must be one of the most frustrating players on a football pitch. There is no denying the talent he has but lately he has struggled to show it in an Arsenal shirt. In 35 appearances last season, Ozil scored six goals and assisted a further three, his worst return since joining the Gunners. Now 30, Ozil has been linked with a move away to Turkey in recent weeks, but still remains an Arsenal player. He has been dubbed a player that goes missing in the big games, and this almost certain downgrade will see him missing from most teams in FIFA 20. Aston Villa – Lovre Kalinic Kalinic in action for Aston Villa in the FA Cup FIFA 19 rating – 77 FIFA 20 potential rating – 74 Signed in the January transfer window as a starting goalkeeper as Aston Villa pushed for a play-off spot, the Croatian had an underwhelming few months. Kalinic made seven appearances since signing and in those games conceded 12 goals. The impressive form of Villa’s other shot-stopper Jed Steer meant Kalinic was surplus to requirements, and now likely to be downgraded in September. Bournemouth – Jordon Ibe Jordan Ibe (right) has struggled to be a regular in Eddie Howe’s starting XI since his move from Liverpool FIFA 19 rating – 74 FIFA 20 potential rating – 71 Since joining Bournemouth the winger’s career has fizzled out after initially showing talent at Liverpool. In the 2018/19 season the winger made 19 appearances, only mustering up one goal and one assist. Ibe already has a rather underwhelming 74 rating, a silver card, and poor performances and lack of impact last season mean that could fall further in the next instalment of the game. Brighton & Hove Albion – Jurgen Locadia Jurgen Locadia hasn’t been able to bring his goal scoring prowess to the Premier League FIFA 19 rating – 76 FIFA 20 potential rating – 74 When this signing went through in January 2018, for a club-record £14m, Brighton fans were excited by the Dutch forward. He scored 45 goals in 137 Eredivisie appearances, but he has had no impact at the south coast side. Last season the 25-year-old made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring just four goals. Most of these games came from the substitute’s bench as Locadia was third choice behind Glenn Murray and Florin Andone. Burnley – Johann Berg Gudmundsson Gudmundsson will be hoping to revive his form at Burnley this season FIFA 19 rating – 79 FIFA 20 potential rating – 76 The 28-year-old, who signed for Sean Dyche’s side ahead of the 2016/17 Premier League season, looked an impressive signing for a typically low-spending Burnley. Gudmundsson, however, has dipped in and out of good form in those years, and last year was another nearly campaign for the Icelandic ace. In 36 games he scored three goals and assisted a further seven, but found himself in and out of the starting XI as Burnley’s form ebbed and flowed. As much as it wasn’t a complete dud of a season for Gudmundsson, it may still be enough to see him knocked down, from an originally generous 79 rating, on FIFA 19. Chelsea – Jorginho Maurizio Sarri and Jorginho both joined Chelsea from Napoli last summer, with Sarri gone where does that leave Jorginho? FIFA 19 rating – 84 FIFA 20 potential rating – 82 Imagine being top of almost every stat to do with passing in the Premier League as a midfielder, yet still be on this list for potential downgrades? That is exactly where Chelsea midfielder Jorginho finds himself after a strange first season since his move from Napoli in the summer. In the Premier League alone, Jorginho completed 3,118 passes but without a single assist and only six big chances created, due to his position on the pitch. For some Chelsea fans, his opening season performance is of a level that leaves them content, as his role is to keep the ball moving and the team ticking. So where does that leave Jorginho’s first season? Surely he will be another losing a few marks with EA Sports in the new FIFA. Crystal Palace – Christian Benteke Christian Benteke has had another difficult season FIFA 19 rating – 78 FIFA 20 potential rating – 75 It is safe to say the Christian Benteke who thrilled at Aston Villa has seen his skills diminished. He just doesn’t seem to be the striker he once was, netting once in 16 games last season for the Eagles. With a shot accuracy of 31 per cent in 2018/19, Palace’s apparent talisman striker was left in the cold, with Hodgson using Wilfred Zaha down the middle and then later Michy Batshuayi, who joined on loan from Chelsea in January. Benteke may be in need of a move away from the Premier League so he can get back to scoring goals and revamp his career in football and on FIFA. Everton – Jordan Pickford Origi capitalised on Jordan Pickford’s error in the Merseyside derby in December FIFA 19 rating – 83 FIFA 20 potential rating – 82 He was cast into folklore along with the rest of the England side after the 2018 World Cup. However, the domestic 2018/19 Premier League season had some moments the Toffees keeper will want to forget. Pickford started FIFA 19 with a respectable 83 rating and did keep 14 clean sheets in the season just gone by. One part of his game which has always been in question, though, is how commanding he is; and with 13 punches made last season it is still something that may need improving. Perhaps the most forgettable of all 13 was his attempted clearance in added time of the Merseyside derby against Liverpool. As he failed to tip the ball over the crossbar from a way-ward Van Dijk shot it bounced off the woodwork and straight to Divock Origi who made it 1-0 in the dying moments – that is enough for a downgrade in the eyes of some. Leicester City – Rachid Ghezzal Rachid Ghezzal in action for Leicester City FIFA 19 rating – 75 FIFA 20 potential rating – 74 Another Algerian right winger who loves to cut in on his left foot – but he hasn’t quite had the same results as Riyad Mahrez. Ghezzal, who joined from Ligue 1 outfit Monaco for a little over £10m, has struggled to get going in the Premier League. The 27-year old only produced one goal all season and had a shot accuracy of 26 per cent. In a breakthrough season where other new signings, such as James Maddison, prevailed, Ghezzal found himself on the bench at best for most of the season and will likely see his stats shrink. Liverpool – Dejan Lovren Dejan Lovren was absent from the Liverpool team despite playing in the 2018 Champions League and World Cup final FIFA 19 rating – 81 FIFA 20 potential rating – 79 Who remembers when Dejan Lovren told the world he was one of the best central defenders in football? In fairness, he was commenting after reaching both the Champions League final and the World Cup final in the same year – both of which he lost. Since returning from last summer’s World Cup with a slight injury, Lovren struggled to be a significant part of Liverpool’s unbelievable 2018/19 season, falling down the pecking order behind Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as Virgil Van Dijk’s defensive partner. He began FIFA 19 with an overall of 81, but made only 13 appearances all season, and is likely to be on the end of a small downgrade for FIFA 20. Manchester City – Kyle Walker Kyle Walker has signed a new contract at Manchester City FIFA 19 rating – 84 FIFA 20 potential rating – 83 Perhaps the biggest shock in the list given he won the domestic treble with Manchester City, but at times last season Walker wasn’t up to speed with him teammates. We are not talking about his pace here, as this is something he won’t lose anytime soon, but his awareness and lack of quality at both ends of the pitch were visible at times for Pep Guardiola’s side. The Englishman seemingly struggled more so in the attacking final third of the pitch, attempting 59 crosses and coming out with a completion rate of just seven per cent.. Defensively he did not have to do much last year thanks to City’s dominance against most, but he shared a tackle success rate of 60 per cent with a makeshift full-back on the other side of the pitch in Oleksandr Zinchenko. If Walker does receive a downgrade it will be presumably be small but it is justifiable. Manchester United – David De Gea De Gea had a season to forget by his standards which will reflect in his FIFA 20 rating FIFA 19 rating – 91 FIFA 20 potential rating- 89 The David De Gea we have all become accustomed to over the last few years was far from home in the 2018/19 season with a few poor days at the office. He conceded 54 goals in the Premier League alone last season and four of those goals were caused by his own mistakes. Manchester United’s defence has come under criticism in the past few seasons and De Gea is now no longer immune after his errors. He kept just seven clean sheets, compared to Golden Glove winner Alisson’s 21 for Liverpool. Therefore any Manchester United, or Spanish fans out there, should brace themselves for De Gea to no longer be at the top of the pile of goalkeepers in FIFA 20. Newcastle United – Jonjo Shelvey Jonjo Shelvey barely featured for Newcastle in the second half of last season FIFA 19 rating – 78 FIFA 20 potential rating – 76 Another English player with bags of ability but quite often little to show for it. Shelvey was a midfielder some English fans wanted to be in England’s World Cup squad in Russia last summer. As well as battling with injuries last season, the Newcastle midfielder was often overlooked by now departed manager Rafa Benitez. When things aren’t going Shelvey’s way, he can often be a liability on the pitch, known for losing his head during tough situations. But, on paper, he is Newcastle’s best deep-lying playmaker. Whoever becomes the next manager at Newcastle will hope they can get Shelvey back to his best, but for now he is slipping away. Norwich – Ralf Fahrmann Fahrmann played against Manchester City in the Champions League round of 16 last season FIFA 19 rating – 83 FIFA 20 potential rating – 80 If you follow the Bundesliga then the name of Ralf Fahrmann should be one that rings a bell, but it was quite a shock when Norwich announced the goalkeeper as a signing from Schalke earlier this month. In his last campaign in Germany, the 30-year old struggled as Schalke finished 14th in the league after a worrying campaign that briefly threatened relegation during the early fixtures. Overall, Fahrmann played 25 games in all competitions, and conceded 41 goals in those games as Schalke showed their defensive frailties. Mind you, ten of those goals came at the hands of Manchester City during a two legged round of sixteen tie in the Champions League. Sheffield United – Phil Jagielka Jagielka shot to fame while playing for Sheffield United, before making a name for himself at Everton FIFA 19 rating – 78 FIFA 20 potential rating – 75 A welcome homecoming for any Blades fans out there as their former player, who also went in goal and kept a clean sheet, is returning from Everton. At 36-years-old, Jagielka’s return to Bramall Lane comes close to the end of his career, which is the main reason for predicting a rating change for him come FIFA 20. Last season he featured for Everton just seven times and in those games had a tackle success rate of 71 per cent and was also sent off against Wolves. Southampton – Mohamed Elyounoussi Elyounoussi has struggled for game time this season FIFA 19 rating – 79 FIFA 20 potential rating – 76 Another player with all the gear but who sometimes looks like he has no idea – in the Premier League at least. Norwegian winger Mohamed Elyounoussi joined Southampton from Swiss side FC Basel, an attacker known for silky skills and tormenting opposing defenders. Elyounoussi, though, fell out of favour with manager Mark Hughes who left the 24-year old out of his starting XI as Southampton struggled to get their season going. Even when Ralf Hassenhuttl was brought in to replace the departing Hughes, Elyounoussi still failed to impress  as Southampton eventually clawed themselves away from the relegation places. From 20 attempts on goal Elyounoussi failed to convert one chance, missing four clear opportunities which would have made the ride for Saints fans a lot easier. This stat means the Norwegian ended the season without a single goal involvement, and emphasises his need for a downgrade on FIFA 20. Tottenham Hotspur – Dele Alli Dele Alli’s performance has been criticised FIFA 19 rating – 84 FIFA 20 potential rating – 83 ‘We’ve got Alli, Dele Alli, I just don’t think you understand’ – don’t worry Spurs fans, we know you have him, but where was he last season? The English midfielder has been hailed for his consistency and high levels of performance for Tottenham over the last few seasons but in a season where his side reached the Champions League final, Alli was hard to spot. A frustrating campaign was there for all to see on the pitch as Alli, through lack of discipline, conceded 27 fouls. On top of that his goal tally for the season ended at a rather poor five although he did spend a lot of time in a deeper role than he has previously been utilised in. Harry Kane was also injured for large parts of the season, a player that Alli has a close relationship with on the pitch, with the two effortlessly feeding off of one another in previous years. Meaning the 23-year old Alli also only amassed three assists in the Premier League a very poor season by his own and any fans standards. Watford – Roberto Pereyra Argentine ace Pereyra has been in and out of form in the recent months, lacking consistency FIFA 19 rating – 79 FIFA 20 potential rating – 77 Last season the Argentinian midfielder was hit by injuries that kept him out of the squad for the latter part of Watford’s campaign. He still managed to score six goals for the Hornets but also missed another six big chances, which could have fired them higher up the table. It appeared when he did play, the 28-year old was slightly too eager to pull the trigger, as although he scored six goals, that was from a total of 57 shots throughout the season. It wasn’t necessarily a poor season, but Watford ended the campaign struggling for points, despite an explosive start and reaching the FA Cup final; which is why he could be on the receiving end of a downgrade. West Ham United – Javier Hernandez West Ham need Chicharito to discover his form inside the box again now Marko Arnautovic has left the club. FIFA 19 rating – 79 FIFA 20 potential rating – 78 The Mexican striker has made a living out of being one of the best poachers in the game. However, at West Ham, Chicharito has struggled to maintain his form and last season was another frustrating one. In 25 appearances for the Hammers he scored seven goals, as well as missing the same number of big chances. The 31-year old may not have much longer left in the Premier League, but West Ham have now given him the no.9 shirt ahead of the new season. Wolverhampton Wanderers – Adama Traore Adama Traore is the most explosive player in the Premier League, but has scored just once for Wolves FIFA 19 rating – 75 FIFA 20 potential rating – 73 There is no doubt he is one of the fastest players in the league, and built like a powerhouse too, he can accelerate past people with ease. However the one main BUT in this conversation is when he gets anywhere near the goal, as he just can’t find the back of the net, or a teammate. Wingers are known for their crossing and the former Barcelona winger put in 35 of them this season – with a return of no assists and a crossing accuracy of 13 per cent. Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo brought Traore to the club knowing his dribbling ability was lethal, and would have hoped he could make him into a player. Unfortunately, sprint speed and acceleration are not the only statistics to help a player’s overall rating. You can be a bronze item and be lighting quick – and that could be what happens to him on FIFA 21 if he’s not careful.
