I recall my father as a fashion and style mentor. He set the bar very high. And, for me, it was the wrong bar.

In my memory, his wardrobe comes into sharp focus not only visually, but also as a reflection of his personal statements regarding essential goals, achievements and status.

It was only 2 or 3 years ago where much of the world, or at least those perhaps lacking in sartorial elegance, was obsessed with an item of clothing known as a Onesie.  Usually made for people who want a comfortable, cosy evening on the sofa or perhaps for those not going out on a […]

"That dress was a turning point for me," Clare Waight Keller recently said by telephone from her family home in the remote English county of Cornwall. Of course he was referring to the high fashion white silk cady dress and the hand-embroidered veil, designed for Meghan Markle's 2018 wedding with Prince Harry. "Life before was […]

For men of a dandy disposition, the annual, early-Summer Wardrobe revamp is something of a ritual: a ceremonious affair that occupies the mind from the moment the first daffodils of the year sprout. And, it’s a time when a little spectral joviality comes into play  – as demonstrated by these, our choice of the best warmer-clime staples that have recently come to our attention. First up is a new travel coat (£6,883) from Savile Row stalwart Richard Anderson. The eponymous proprietor’s tailoring prowess is neatly exemplified by the fact that, uniquely, he applies sleeves to shoulders by hand rather than machine  – “To give a crisper, better-formed bespoke look to the garment,” as he puts it. And, this jacket – which comes in light-weight turquoise, with two plaquette crescent-shaped pockets on the front, and a button-fastening mechanism designed with securely hold as much as possible – demonstrates his cutting-room skills admirably. If you lead an itinerant lifestyle all year round, consider also snapping up the tweed version in slanting check. It’s traditional for a trip to Savile Row to subsequently entail a short walk south to Jermyn Street for shirts, shoes and accessories, and one of that thoroughfare’s most celebrated denizens is Turnbull & Asser – an establishment that has been purveying handmade clothing and accessories clientele including royalty, world leaders and celebrities for over a century. The house’s linen shirts range went down a storm with the menswear intelligentsia last Summer, which has prompted this new collection (£215 each) inspired by French workwear. Juxtaposing bold and fine stripes, the collection features a cheery palate of vintage white, brick red, warm indigo with flashes of fresh turquoise and yellow. Finally, every sartorially savvy man needs to purchase a pair of new smart-casual slip-ons at some point between April and June, and while many European houses have long-established models – Tod’s suede moccasins spring to mind, as do Gucci’s horsebit loafers – our eye has been caught by Baudoin & Lange’s impressive range (from £305). Ideal as part of a preppy-ensemble for Wimbledon, Henley, Goodwood or Royal Ascot, these distinctive creations are the fruits of founders Allan Baudoin and Bo van Langeveld passion for marrying art and technology to create footwear which packs an imperiously elegant silhouette and yet are kind to your feet thanks to their unlined structure, handcrafted, shock-absorbing insoles and the soft-and-supple suede from which they’re crafted. If you subscribe to the adage that your shoes are the first thing people subconsciously notice about you, consider going bespoke (from £525). It’ll massively enhance those already impressive comfort credentials, thus adding panache to your entire demeanour.

By P.J. O’Rourke Lately there has been a lot of anger and indignation about income inequality. Some blame this on . . . income inequality. I blame it on rich people in T-shirts. I won’t mention Mark Zuckerberg by name. But, honestly, young man, you’re almost 35 years old, worth $72 billion, and you’re wearing […]

The places where a second tier of snobbery were once clothed resonate in my memory as I pass Turnbull & Asser on the bus. Chipp, maker of jackets for the not- quite-prep-school boys of my youth, was not as bespoke or as quaint. Nor did it tailor for 007. 57th Street, Madison Avenue, all rife […]
