LAKE FOREST —  When Laguna Beach Police Officer Thomas McGuire stooped down to look into a cage at the Serrano Animal & Bird Hospital on Friday, Feb.22, he heard a low growl and quick hiss. “I thought he might recognize me,” McGuire said half-smiling. Inside the cage was a bobcat, recovering after being hit by McGuire’s patrol car, Tuesday, on Laguna Canyon Road. #gallery-1643307-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1643307-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1643307-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1643307-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ Laguna Beach Police Officer, Thomas McGuire visits with the 1-year-old bobcat he accidentally struck with his car. (Photo by Karen Tapia, Contributing Photographer) McGuire and Cpl. Darin Germaine — in separate cars — were responding to a call about a person walking in traffic shortly after 3 p.m. While en route, McGuire said, he saw something out of the corner of his eye. “Then I saw a silhouette of a cat running across the road,” he said. “Then I heard a sound and felt horrible. I thought I had just hit someone’s house cat.” McGuire stopped his car and radioed his boss. He then got out to check on the injured animal. “The bobcat was lying in the center of the roadway on its side and had labored breathing,” McGuire said. “When I walked up, I realized it wasn’t a house cat, it was much bigger.” Germaine, a wildlife enthusiast like McGuire, pulled over to help. He nudged the cat to see how it was doing. “He perked up quickly, like, ‘What are you doing,'” McGuire said. The officers stopped traffic as the bobcat roused itself and slowly walked across the southbound lanes. They called the department’s Animal Control Services, knowing the officers would have the necessary equipment to catch and restrain the animal. That quick response on the part of McGuire and Germaine was what saved the bobcat, said Dr. Kristi Krause, a veterinarian at the Lake Forest animal hospital operated by wildlife veterinarian Dr. Scott Weldy. “Especially as cold as it’s been, he would have deteriorated quickly,” Krause said Friday, as she watched McGuire check in on the animal. “Getting him here quickly was the key.” When the 11-pound bobcat arrived at the hospital he was diagnosed with head trauma. He had blood coming from his nose, blood in his urine and his pupils were uneven. He also had blood in the chamber of his eyes, Krause said. Krause let him rest overnight and on Wednesday sedated him and conducted a physical. He had fleas and ticks but no mange — something the hospital has seen on other wildlife. Though he hasn’t yet shown an appetite, Krause said the prognosis is good. “Often they don’t eat right away when they come to us,” she said. When he does become hungry, he’ll be fed a diet of chicken, chicks, mice and commercial cat food. “Then when he starts eating well and gets extra grumpy, that’s when we’ll release him,” Krause said. “We’ll coordinate with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey), who like to collect data on these animals, including biological samples and DNA.” This is the second bobcat the animal hospital has taken in this year. In 2018, the facility took in about 10, including a bobcat found in traffic on Laguna Canyon Road. The Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, adjacent the canyon road, is most often where the rescued bobcats seem to come from. Dick Newell, who founded Orange County Trackers — a group of biologists who monitor wildlife — has tracked bobcats in the wilderness park since 2005. He said the wilderness park and the surrounding community is home to dozens of bobcats. On Friday, McGuire said seeing the bobcat in the process of healing was uplifting. “If I see him again, I’ll give him a ticket,” he joked. “It’s nice to see that something that could have ended badly, didn’t,” he said. “Happy this one got to go in the win column.” [related_articles location=”left” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-tag”]
