SANTA CRUZ — Just as the Sheriff’s Office announced that methamphetamine causes more overdose deaths than heroin in the county, Santa Cruz police caught a woman who swallowed the deadly stimulant and ended up in the hospital. Witnesses told authorities a white Volkswagen van had been attracting a lot of “seedy people and nefarious activity” on the 1900 block of Mission Street, according to a police Facebook post on Tuesday. Deborah Kludasch, 59, was inside the van. While officers started to interview her, she “started sweating profusely, vomiting and having a hard time breathing,” police said. She admitted she had swallowed her methamphetamine before police contacted her, according to the post. Emergency medical services workers administered aid and she was taken to a hospital in the area. Police impounded the van, which had expired registration. Anyone with information about this case or other possible crimes can call police at 831-420-5820 or leave an anonymous tip at 831-420-5995.
