THE first race of the inaugural MotoE season has been cancelled after ALL of its bikes were destroyed in a huge fire during a test event in Spain. An explosion at the Jerez circuit led to a massive blaze consuming each of the 18 all-electric motorbikes while they were parked in a paddock, as well as spare parts and tools. A huge fire destroyed every all-electrical bike set to be used in MotoE MotoGP said in a statement that the MotoE World Cup paddock facility caught fire 12.15am local time, causing major damage and burning “the majority of material”. The series had been due to start at the Spanish Grand Prix circuit on May 5 but MotoGP said a revised calendar for 2019 would be announced. It said nobody had been hurt in the blaze and an investigation was underway to determine how the fire started. MotoE is a new all-electric support series for MotoGP. MotoGP said: “This ambition to evolve and experiment with new technologies brings with it an associated risk. “It can be confirmed, however, that no motorcycles were charging at the time of the incident in the box in which the fire started. “Dorna Sports and all of our partners in this new venture are committed to getting the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup back on track as soon as possible, with work already under way to begin rebuilding and replacing materials and motorcycles lost in the fire.” [article-rail-section title=”MOST READ IN SPORT” posts_category=”18″ posts_number=”6″ query_type=”popular” /] The governing body responsible for MotoE, the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme [FIM], also issued a statement via its president.
