Here is the last part of my Best of 2018 series – best films of last year (Part 1 and Part 2 here). Again, I haven’t watched a lot of movies which released last year (Ee Ma Yau, Sudani From Nigeria etc), so this – like the last two – is an incomplete list. 2018 gave […]

COPS hunting for missing Libby Squire have “scaled down” their search – two weeks after she vanished. But police said they will not give up hope of finding the philosophy student as they revealed details about the next stages of the investigation. Police say they have ‘scaled down’ the search for missing Libby Squire Libby was last seen on a park bench yards from her student digs on January 31 And the Sun is offering a £10,000 reward for information that helps locate Libby, 21. She hasn’t been seen since being turned away from The Welly club in Hull city centre on January 31 for being too drunk. A huge search over the past two weeks has seen police divers scouring ponds near Libby’s home where she was last seen. They have also used special infrared cameras. SEARCH ‘SCALED DOWN’ Humberside Police also confirmed they have trawled through hundreds of hours of CCTV footage as they try to piece together her last movements. At a police press conference on Thursday Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley said Libby “may have come to some harm” and released images of replica clothes she was wearing on the night she vanished – including a black denim skirt, a faux leather jacket and distinctive trainers. Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley, said: “Over the last two weeks, our enquiries into Libby’s disappearance have continued around the clock with detectives and officers working night and day to find her and to understand what happened that night.
We are continuing to support Libby’s family through this incredibly difficult and distressing time. They are understandably distraught not knowing where their daughter and loved one is, and we will endeavour to give them the answers they desperately need
“While we do continue to be hopeful and we will always keep an open mind, Libby has been missing for 14-days now and we sadly have to consider she may have come to some harm. “We are continuing to support Libby’s family through this incredibly difficult and distressing time. They are understandably distraught not knowing where their daughter and loved one is, and we will endeavour to give them the answers they desperately need. “We are determined and we will do all we can to find Libby – she is our priority.” But Det Supt Smalley also said the high visibility searches were likely to be scaled down. CHILLING CCTV FOOTAGE He explained: “More work is now taking place behind the scenes rather than in public view, however this does not mean the investigation is slowing or coming to an end, it is exactly the opposite and is very much active and ongoing. Chilling CCTV footage on the night she vanished shows Libby stumbling towards the Welly nightclub before the second-year philosophy undergraduate was put in a taxi by pals. She was last seen on a park bench near her student digs in Wellesley Avenue at 11.45pm. CCTV footage then showed a woman believed to be Libby getting into a car and being driven away at 12.09am.
More work is now taking place behind the scenes rather than in public view, however this does not mean the investigation is slowing or coming to an end, it is exactly the opposite and is very much active and ongoing
In separate footage revealed by The Sun, a similar car was seen being driven half a mile away ten minutes later. A woman living close to where Libby was last seen later described hearing “bloodcurdling screams” at 12.30am – around 20 minutes after she vanished. After she was reported missing, cops searched a river and pond close to her home but no trace has been found. Bins, drains and gardens were also combed by officers but searches have so far proved fruitless. BUTCHER IN COURT Polish dad-of-two Pawel Relowicz, 24, appeared in court on Monday charged with voyeurism, outraging public decency and three counts of burglary unrelated to Libby. He was originally arrested on suspicion of abducting Libby and still remains under investigation. Up to 50 detectives are working on the case. The butcher allegedly performed a sex act on himself on Libby’s street just 12 days before she vanished. He is also accused of stealing a “quantity” of sex toys, condoms, knickers and photographs from a home in Hull days before she was last seen. The alleged burglary – where a laptop, Kindle and speaker were also stolen – is said to have taken place between January 25 and January 28. much ado about cinema

Twenty-four year old Julie (Honor Swinton-Byrne) wants for nothing in life, bar artistic inspiration. As a film student, she avoids the starving artist stereotype by calling up her parents every time she needs supplies – “Mummy, I need two hundred pounds again!” – in order to continue treading water on multiple fruitless projects. Her airily […]

In 2009 I had a newborn, a recently vacated teaching position, and all the slow-rolling expansive days that come with those things. My cell phone could only call, text, and take blurry pictures. I had a first-generation iPod Touch, with a handful of poorly designed word game apps that I would play, in total darkness, […]

Not every student loves to read, but there are benefits missed by not including any reading in one’s studies. Of course, some degree of reading is unavoidable, for example, one has to read a homework assignment or a short email announcement. But extended reading? That has to be a conscious choice. Let’s see if we […]

I had my annual physical a few days ago and one of the things I was chatting to the Dr. about was that I have been having trouble with deep/restful sleep. I always seem to be super tired and pounding coffee, then having a cookie, some beer, more coffee and intermittent water. He asked me […]

This has been a very busy week with a lot of watching, looking, reading and thinking (and the occasional bit of practice) – all demanding but enjoyable. My FMP will, by necessity, require me to shoot images of people, specifically miners (current and retired) and possibly their immediate families as well. I’ve never really done […]
