It’s been two weeks into the new year, but M&A is back! Well, not officially. As I wrote about in December, despite the first six months of movement (with all its tricky ways to calculate), the last six months were relatively quiet in M&A in media and entertainment. (The biggest deal was Pandora getting snapped […]

NETFLIX is increasing the price of its membership plans over in the USA – and experts warn that Brits could be next in line for a hike. The hugely popular streaming service occasionally bumps its monthly fee, largely to fund its quest to create original TV shows and movies. Netflix is getting a major price hike over in the USA Netflix is raising prices by between 13% and 18% depending on your plan. The most popular Standard plan is getting the largest bump, moving from $11 a month to $13. It’s the biggest price rise for the company since it launched 12 years ago. Thankfully, a Netflix spokesperson told The Sun that the price rise will not affect UK customers – for now, at least. Brit viewers are safe for now, but an expert has warned that prices might not stay low forever A top industry watcher has warned The Sun that Brits will probably see another price rise in the future. “Netflix consistently rolls out price hikes whenever they can, so it’s highly likely they will roll out another hike globally,” Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Securities, told us. “This deal is U.S. and some parts of Latin America, so a roll out elsewhere will follow in due time.” He added that the average revenue for Netflix in the USA is $11.15 (£8.69) for September last year, while the rest of the world pays $8.69 (£6.77) on average. “They charge more in the UK than in India, but the international average is a lot stickier and price increases roll out slowly,” Pachter explained. He said this is because household incomes are typically smaller outside of the US “so purchasing power is lower, and it’s harder to charge the same amount”. [boxout headline=”Netflix in 2017 – the key stats” intro=”Here’s a look back at Netflix’s 2017…”] Netflix members watched more than 140 million hours per day That’s just over one billion hours per week The most popular day for Netflix viewing was Sunday, January 1 Mexico had the most members watching Netflix every single day. One person watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 365 days in a row The average member watched around 60 movies on Netflix in 2017 The most popular show to “devour” (watching more than two hours per day) was American Vandal, followed by 3% and 13 Reasons Why The most popular show to “savour” (watching less than two hours per day) was The Crown, followed by Big Mouth and Neo Yokio One user in Antarctica binged through Shameless in 2017 [/boxout] In 2017, Netflix boosted the cost of an annual UK subscription to £7.99 per month, increasing the total payment by £6 per year. And the premium plan rose from £8.99 to £9.99 every month, tacking on an additional £12 to customers’ bills. Netflix offers three different plans in the UK. The “Basic” plan costs £5.99, and includes: watching on one screen at a time, app support on multiple devices, unlimited films and TV programmes, the ability to cancel at any time, and the first month free. If you move to “Standard” for £7.99, you get all of those perks, plus the ability to watch on two screens at once, and view HD content. And for “Premium” and £9.99, you get all of those same perks, as well as simultaneous streaming on four devices, and support for 4K Ultra HD video. There’s also been talk of a fourth cheaper plan – but nothing has been confirmed. If the Standard plan was to rise in line with the USA’s 18% hike, it would cost Brits £9.43 a month – or an extra £17.26 a year. At the time, analyst Dan Ives told us that there was “a 30 to 35% chance” the deal could go ahead. While big corporate mergers can often mean consumers lose out thanks to reduced competition, an Apple-Netflix buyout could’ve boosted your bank balance. Ives said he believed that “if anything, pricing goes down” with Apple’s potential Netflix acquisition. According to Ives, Apple and Netflix could combine their content libraries and “lower pricing as a whole” to entice new customers. He said this joint streaming service would be a “golden goose” for Apple. However, the rumoured Apple acquisition of Netflix never went ahead.
