You Ask a Lot of Questions

Given the number of corners of my house I have completely emptied, cleaned, and reorganized over the past couple weeks, I feel certain we must live in a geodesic dome. At first glance our house does not appear much tidier or emptier than it did before, although we have now put 11 bags of detritus […]

On Friday, President Trump announced he would nominate William Barr to serve as attorney general. Barr, formerly the attorney general for the late President George H.W. Bush, who worked alongside Robert Mueller in that administration, is a conventional, establishment choice for the role, which has been a political football for months. In a tweet the day of the announcement, the president praised Barr as “one of the most highly respected lawyers and legal minds in the Country” and said he was looking forward to his joining the administration. Of course Barr will need to first be confirmed by the Senate, but he is eminently qualified for the position (he has, after all, filled it before!) and is well-respected both in Washington and in the private sector. Barr has also given voice to some of the concerns of Trump’s base, commenting to the press that Hillary Clinton should be investigated for the Uranium One deal and expressing concern about the political donations to Democrats among Mueller’s staff. Hopefully this choice will serve to repair the relationship between the president and his Justice Department, which has been a rocky one ever since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation. Now more than ever, America needs a stable hand steering the department, a figure who can credibly oversee the final stages of the Mueller investigation but still retain the trust of the chief executive. Maybe last week’s fanfare to honor the life and service of late President George H.W. Bush inspired President Trump in his nomination of Barr to reprise his role as attorney general. Whatever the reason, we consider this a thoughtful choice, and look forward to an even-handed confirmation process and Barr’s tenure in the second half of this administration.

Since the novel is set in the midst of the 12thcentury it goes deep into some details about the Medieval period. For […]

Chorister at Home

This afternoon we opened our Advent door to White Cranberry tea, which was really an infusion. The white turned out to be chocolate, though we only know this from an examination of the ingredients. Pour out too early and it makes for lovely, pinkish cranberry-flavoured tea. Pour out later and its darker pink, tastes more […]

synchrony Women in Leadership 2018

A great deal has been written about the pathways and barriers to women’s advancement into leadership positions. Concepts such as the glass ceiling, concrete walls, sticky floors and career labyrinthshave received significant attention in research and popular media. The recent advancement of women into key leadership roles in business, higher education and government are seen by many as positive […]
