Season 17 of “American Idol” ended on May 19. Will the new winner enjoy more success than the 2018 champion, Maddie Poppe? After all, she didn’t even get a chance to perform on this year’s finale despite releasing her first album, “Whirlwind,” just two days prior. What a contrast to the early days of the show, when the previous season’s winner was always showcased on the episode that unveiled the new winner of the franchise. This Emmy-winning reality competition series began in 2002, For more than a decade, it was a ratings powerhouse with many of those winners enjoying some success. The first-ever champ, Kelly Clarkson, has won three Grammys and turned her fame into a string of hit records and an ongoing gig as a judge on the competition, NBC’s’ “The Voice.” And season 4 winner Carrie Underwood has done even better, having sold upwards of records and won a shelf load of music awards. However, many of the more recent music newcomers to be named “American Idol” have found that their time in the spotlight is fleeting. In the photo gallery above, we take a look back at the first 16 “American Idol” winners to date and see how many have been lucky so far and which have been jinxed. For James Corden, a “Carpool Karaoke” with Celine Dion means keeping a firm grip on the steering wheel. A new singing-and-motoring session with one of music’s most powerful voices is the centerpiece of “The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special 2019,” which CBS airs Monday at 10 p.m. After taking recent spins with such icons as Barbra Streisand and Sir Paul McCartney — both likely to be excerpted during the hour — the usually comedic Corden confirmed that the participation of five-time Grammy winner Dion, who’s planning a new album and her first concert tour in more than a decade (following a Las Vegas residency), lets him check off another long-desired “Carpool Karaoke” guest. “It’s strange sometimes when we do these,” the ever-friendly Corden said. “You start looking at a list of songs and try to decide which ones you should do, and Celine Dion is in that same rarefied air where you try to work out how many songs you should do with Elton John or Paul McCartney. You’re just like, ‘Well, we have to do that one’ or, ‘How can we not do that one?’ And before you know it, you’ve got 15 songs and you have to pare it down somehow. “She was fantastic, I have to say,” Corden added of filming with Dion. “I enjoyed being in her orbit so much.” Two previous editions of “The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special” have won Emmy Awards, but Corden noted that for the singers who are riding along, “This is a very unnatural place to be. We’re talking about some of the biggest, most recognizable artists in the world who — more out of necessity than ego — are always surrounded by people like publicists, security guards and assistants. “And we’re saying, ‘We’re going to shut the doors, and it’s just me and you in the car. And we’re going to sing your songs.’ I feel like I have to commit to it, to get them to that place where they’ll commit to it like we’re singing at Madison Square Garden. I think we’ve all had that moment, singing at the top of our lungs in our cars, imagining that we are that person on stage.” The latest venture of late-night’s “Carpool Karaoke” into primetime comes amid a typically busy year for Corden, who also hosts the Tony Awards again June 9 on CBS and will have a major role in December’s movie version of the stage musical “Cats.” For now, the British amateur crooner laughingly admitted, “There’s never a time when I think, ‘Oh, I’m going to sound great now!’ I’m just trying to get them to where I can start to soften slightly.”

Breaking free. Ariana Grande’s pal Tayla Parx — a holder of one of the coveted “matching diamonds” the Grammy winner mentions in “7 Rings” — revealed that the pop singer has grown with each romantic relationship she’s had. [ami-related id=”- Click to search articles -” url=”https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/pictures/ariana-grandes-dating-history-a-timeline-of-her-exes-and-flings/” title=”Ariana Grande’s Dating Timeline: All of Her Exes and Flings” target=”” inset=”true”] Parx, 25, admitted to Us Weekly at the BMI 67th annual Pop Awards in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, May 15, that she does not “know” the type of person she hopes Grande, also 25, decides to date next. However, she shared that the Nickelodeon alum is enjoying single life. “I think right now in her life she’s having fun just being Ari, you know? And I don’t know, it’s why we’re gonna evolve over time,” she told Us at the time. “We’ll see, whether she ends up with a guy or girl, whatever it is. I think that she’s learning with every person that she goes forward with and maybe they’ll be an ex or maybe they’ll be the next. I think that she’s learning more and more what she wants and more what she doesn’t want.” (Fans thought Grande may have come out as bisexual in her song “Monopoly” with Victoria Monét, which was released in April. Lyrics for the track include: “I like women and men (yeah) / Work so f–kin’ much, need a twinny, twin, twin (yeah) / You’d be straight for life if I gave you my pin (yeah) / Even though we gave up that 90 percent for the win, go.”) Tayla Parx and Ariana Grande. Parx also spoke about her own dating life, adding: “I’m just as excited to see how it all turns out [for Grande], [the] same way as myself. I’m like, ‘OK.’ Who knows. We’re so young right now and we’re kind of on the grind and traveling around the world. Who knows where we’ll end up love life-wise.” [ami-related id=”- Click to search articles -” url=”https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/pictures/celebrity-friendliest-exes-2011286/” title=”Celebrity Ex-Lovers Who Have Stayed Close” target=”” inset=”true”] Grande has previously been linked to Pete Davidson, to whom she was engaged from June 2018 to October 2018, Big Sean, former backup dancer Ricky Alvarez and late rapper Mac Miller, among others. These men served as inspiration for the former Victorious star’s smash hit “Thank U, Next” — a song Parx helped co-write for Grande’s fifth studio album of the same name, which dropped in February. When asked about the process of creating the record-breaking track, the “I Want You” singer said the experience served as “therapy.” [jwplayer WIhZVQrf-l3ahXupL] “Anytime that I get in with an artist, I usually say it’s a ‘Tayla-made’ session because I’m really catering to that artist and to what their story is and what they want to tell me, and she had a hell of a year and a half,” Parx shared with Us on Tuesday. “So to be able to be a part of her process of being able to see what that was and where she wants to take it and put it into music so the masses understand was really exciting to be a part of that.” [ami-related id=”- Click to search articles -” url=”https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/pictures/celebrity-splits-of-2019-biggest-celebrity-breakups-of-the-year/” title=”Celebrity Splits of 2019″ target=”” inset=”true”] Ross Golan, who co-wrote Grande’s song “Dangerous Woman,” also spoke with Us at the Pop Awards on Tuesday about how the “God Is a Woman” singer is very hands-on in the studio. “You can’t be that by accident,” the 39-year-old told Us. “You don’t become the biggest pop star in the world because someone handed it to you, you know? You have to earn it. She’s brilliant.”
