ESPN analyst Mel Kiper’s latest NFL mock draft is sure to put a smile on the face of Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco. An athletic 6-foot-5 and 250-pound blocker and pass-catcher with no injury concerns? Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson checks all the boxes. It’s why Kiper predicted Denver general manager John Elway will select Hockenson at No. 10 overall in next month’s draft, placing him in rare company among tight ends taken within the first 10 picks over the past two decades: Kellen Winslow (2004), Vernon Davis (2006) and Eric Ebron (2014). Hockenson’s career numbers over two playing seasons at Iowa: 73 catches for 1,080 yards and nine touchdowns. He also ran in on a 4-yard rushing score last year. Kiper, whose first two mock drafts predicted the Broncos would draft a cornerback, explained his rationale on ESPN.com: “This is probably too high to go for an interior offensive linemen, and Denver addressed its need at cornerback in free agency with Kareem Jackson and Bryce Callahan. So I’ll give the Broncos the top tight end in the class in Hockenson, a complete player who will be able to start immediately. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Hockenson has been compared to Rob Gronkowski, and you can see the similarities on film. I’m not sold Denver has a No. 1 tight end on its roster, even as it has used draft picks in recent years on Jeff Heuerman, Jake Butt and Troy Fumagalli.” Kiper also joined a media conference call Tuesday to break down why Hockenson fits in Denver. “Joe Flacco has always been tight-end oriented,” Kiper said. “He had Dennis Pitta as his main target. (The Ravens) drafted two tight ends this past year to help Joe out. One was hurt and of course (Mark) Andrews had the big year. Just with the nature of the quarterback and where Joe Flacco’s eyes tend to lead him, he counts and relies heavily on the tight end.” [related_articles location=”right” show_article_date=”false” article_type=”automatic-primary-tag”] The Broncos re-signed tight end Heuerman on a two-year deal and feature two more at the position rebounding from injury: Jake Butt (ACL) and Troy Fumagalli (sports hernia). Adding Hockenson at No. 10 instead of Missouri quarterback Drew Lock, who Kiper projects at No. 13 to the Dolphins, signals the need for immediate improvement in 2019. “I think Hockenson would be a guy that can help the quarterback rather than take the heir apparent to Flacco for John Elway, who may end up being the quarterback for the next GM if you don’t win this year,” Kiper said. “I think there’s more pressure to win and pressure to win means helping Flacco and that running game out with a tight end who can block as well.”
