BAGGING a big pack doesn’t guarantee value for money. One in five of us fails to use up the items we buy in bumper packs and end up chucking some away, according to topcash back.co.uk. Bulk-buying can be cost effective, but if done wrong it can lead to a lot of waste Other items last better than others. Follow my tips for how to buy big but smart . . . SMALL CAN BE BEAUTIFUL: Most beauty products can become less effective over time and can collect dust and dirt if the lid is constantly on and off, so you may want to forget about buying that huge bottle or tub. I look for offers on smaller items, also because it saves space. I prefer to swap the E45 500ml body lotion, £7.49, for the 200ml bottle, now on offer at Boots for £3.33. TOILETRY TRICKS: Toothpaste lasts ages, as does shampoo and conditioner, so both are great to stock up on. Loo roll is definitely something to bulk-buy but only if you have the space. Get 120 rolls of Cusheen quilted luxury aloe vera toilet paper for £26.99 at Groupon — around 22p a roll. Meanwhile, aloe vera toilet tissue is £3.50 for nine rolls at Tesco — around 39p a roll. That’s a 17p per roll saving in the long run. BEAN THERE, DONE THAT: Coffee can lose flavour over time, so skip the huge packet if you are not going to store it well. A 1kg bag of Lavazza coffee beans are £11 at Sainsbury’s, or instead see how you go with the supermarket’s Fairtrade Italian-style coffee, 227g, for £2.30, which saves you £8.70 immediately and will be a cost-cutter over time. TIN IT TO WIN IT: Tinned food with a long shelf life is fine to buy in bulk. If you have the cupboard space, you can nab 12 tins (two packs of six) of Heinz baked beans at Morrisons for £5.50. That works out at around 46p a tin. With a pack of six usually £3.95 (66p per tin), you are saving 20p per tin.  PRICES correct at time of press. Deals/offers subject to availability Deal of the day TalkTalk’s Fast Broadband package now costs £17.95 per month, down from £27 SNAP up TalkTalk’s Fast Broadband deal in its flash sale.
